She has served as President of the Council of Magistrate Judges and was a member of the Judicial Council of Georgia and the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education for the University of Georgia.

Cavanaugh is an executive member of the Kiwanis Club of Griffin. She received judicial certification from the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada.

Cavanaugh and her husband, Gary, have one child and one grandchild.
